Reading Reflection #3 -- This High School student is keeping it real

School is for everyone, but is a traditional classroom for everyone? Many parents may not be aware of the different school systems offered. Each students is unique in their own special way and each learn differently. Every student is smart, but not all in the same areas. Lets take Philip for example he disliked school and didn't care about his education. Once a teacher saw his need they recommend Philip to a magnet school where he was able to express his passion of learning. He was able to control his education by using technology and working on computers all the time. He was able to create, with his team members, a group project video. He took leadership of the group and know he is learning and is enjoying what he can do. He is getting the best from his education and is striving for excellence. He was not that he was a bad student and dumb, it took a teacher to see him and find out what would be the best decision for him and a traditional classroom was not for him. His teacher saw that he needed a different approach to his education in where the school dedicated his passion into learning.

My overall view on this story was wow. First of all I didn't know that there were different types of schools until like three weeks ago. The only schools that I knew where regular traditional classrooms, charter schools, and home school but that was about it. Learning new different types of schools is great. Every student is not the same and we need to be able to provided all their needs with different types of school for them. I am glad that one teacher was able to see the need for Philip to have the right education for him in order for him to strive.

Philip works on each standard that NETS has for him. All the standards are being addressed by the school and Philip is getting the best out of his education. He is thinking creativity of what he already knows and what is he is learning, he is communicating with his group members and working together, he is able to do research on projects, his thinks critically on how to take an approach on the project, follows the digital citizenship, and understands technology concepts. Philip is a student the performs with excellence in technology and is learning every step of the way.

Reading Reflection #2 -- 10 Ways to engage students with cell phones in the classroom

When we think of cell phones we can only imagine what would happen if students were allowed to use them during class. Most teachers only see the bad side of what a phone is and can do during class because students use it for texting and communicating with their friends instead of doing their work in class. Cell phones have come a major distraction in classroom, but we can find a use to them into the learning experience of students. Cell phones can be used as a response system, recorder, audio, and images for the classrooms. A response system can have the students text the answer to the teacher through the program called Poll Everywhere. Students can use their phones to record experiments or class lecture. Having audio books on student phones can be useful at times because we can have the phone read to the students. Being able to take picture of what a vocabulary word means or simply for project and presentation purpose the phone can be used. Using cell phones in class can have a positive impact on students learning and can expand their mind settings. There needs to be proper ways to be able to use a cell phone in class and not just using it to goof around. Even if cell phones are going to be used for educational purposes there still needs to be guidelines on when and why we can use a cell phone in a classroom environment.

I don't see the need of using cell phones in a classroom. I just really disagree with having the use of cell phones as a tool for educational purposes. I saw that the article did a great job in explaining the positives of it, but it did not convince me of using in my future classroom. I can consider it and using the tool, but I don't find the way of implementing it all the time in my classroom.

In NETS for students it tells us that students should be able to communicate and using cell phones can help. Expanding students knowledge can be seen in using their cell phones for group projects and presentations. Just by providing the basic steps of technology students will be able to strive in having better communication skills.

Reading Reflection #1 -- Should students use their real names on the web?

There are two sides to this article as every question does. In school we teach our students to be who they are without being afraid, but on line it is a different story. When it comes to online material most teachers teach them to use a false identity and to many teachers it is just a sense of security. If their work is being published online and has good history and comments then no one would really know who the person is publishing it. By giving a true identity to the students work we are teaching our students to be wise in everything they do online with published and comments they provide. We want our students to have the best communication skills in school and one way if doing this is being themselves, everywhere including online. By providing the safety of our students is very important and we want them to be safe as possible especially online because it is like putting your finger prints or portfolio online for everyone to see. It can be dangerous and one way in helping our student be safe and by not using our really names online helps and protects the students. Having a false identity does not give penalties to our students when they do something wrong. Using false identity might be god for a step and help them see how careful they need to be as adults when they do start to use their really names. There have been many stories of how students need to change accounts because of various reasons and that should not be the case when they are young.

In my own personal opinion I don't know, but it depends where online. On some for the website I don't trust I use a somewhat false identity, but on websites that are trust worthy I use my real identity. At first I didn't trust anything online with my identity even if my friend would like to put pictures on Facebook I said no. I was had for me because I was taught that online was bad because anyone was able to steal your stuff and identity. I have had my stuff stolen online and it is a hassle to get it back. I don't know what others think, but sometimes it just depends on the morals we grow up with.

NETS for Students does not address in giving their identity online, but working together and publishing work is recommend for students. NETS forces on all the positives of online experience, but we can't guarantee it for our students. Having knowledge on technology needs to acquire  for each student, but providing their identities is not mention in NETS just positive work.

Evaluating Websites Critically

How to evaluate a valid website or information?

The first thing I would look at is the copyright date the most recent the better. Analyzing the information give it is trustworthy or not like sites with .edu, .org, or .gov seem to more accurate on their information. Another things I would look are their citations and references of where the website got their information. One important aspect of checking valid information is be researching their authors, sponsors, or their authority because some sites can have bias thoughts. Being able to know what the site information is trying to point out and making sense for example the context, arguments, structure, and evidence. If a website has to many ads or commercials, this is a big no no that it is not a valid website. We don't need ads, but context of the information we are looking for. Many students think just because a site looks nice or pretty it is fine, but know it is not the design that we look for but the professionalism the website has.

A pressing issue in education

I think the most pressing issue in education is the use of technology, because it is rapidly becoming more used by the young generations. Schools see the need to update all the course material and the methods of teaching with all the new technology begin introduced.

President Obama speaks about technology in schools.
